I mark today as a day I am appalled at the evident homophobia and backwardness of the COMELEC. This makes me truly worry for the future of the country. More and more, we see signs that we live in a nation that has a government that does not understand its people.

Commission on Elections (Comelec) has once again rejected the petition of the Ang Ladlad Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Party to participate in the partylist race. This rejection came even if this time it was to be as a sectoral party.
See the document here:

The document contains proof of the sad fact that the COMELEC itself is in need of fresher, younger, educated minds.

I love you, Philippines.
But really, each day I see the need for the government to change.
And I pray that this change will not come with too heavy a cost.

"I am not condemning the COMELEC, but they cannot represent the well-being of the greater number of people who have intellect and deserve equality, especially the youth."

reposting the response:
The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) has just denied the petition for accreditation of Ang Ladlad Partylist to be able to take part in the 2010 elections and represent Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Filipinos in Congress. The COMELEC, in its 7-page decision, claims that Ang Ladlad advocates sexual immorality and thus the COMELEC is protecting the youth from “moral and spiritual degradation” by denying Ang Ladlad’s petition.

In light of this COMELEC decision, Ang Ladlad is calling all its members, allies, friends and supporters to a general assembly on 14 November 2009, Saturday, 9am-12nn at the Seminar Room 108 of the University Hotel, UP Diliman. For directions, call the University Hotel at landline 926.1975/926. 1953 or mobile 0920.471.0111.
