SNAKES ON A PLANE!

An Internet Meme is
1 : an idea, belief or belief system, or pattern of behavior that spreads throughout a culture either vertically by cultural inheritance (as by parents to children) or horizontally by cultural acquisition (as by peers, information media, and entertainment media)

2 : a pervasive thought or thought pattern that replicates itself via cultural means; a parasitic code, a virus of the mind especially contagious to children and the impressionable
(Definitions taken from Urban Dictionary)

For instance, have you heard of SNAKES ON A PLANE?
What started as a strange soon-to-come action film with Samuel Jackson has grown into a funny worldwide Internet Meme phenomenon thanks to a certain Josh Friedman, who posted about the upcoming film in his blog. Some have even gone so far as to incorporate S.o.a.P. (Snakes on a Plane) as a replacement for "Sh!t happens" and the like. Even unofficial t-shirt designs, rpgs, music and trailers have sprung onto the internet for this film which no one has really seen yet!

The power of the internet, free speech, blogging and the creative masses.

I tell you... its simply incredible to behold at times.

ANOBAYAN!
Image hosting by Photobucket
Yep, last week was a riot!
At work, I noticed a number of my officemates were dressed in particular solid colors as well. Gathering them together, I was able to convince them to pose for the camera in a campy sentai battle pose! (for those not familiar, read more about Sentai here)

Finally got to see V for Vendetta with my Panda bear Isha and I loved how they were able to maintain the message of the comic novel even if they transformed much of the story to match the movie medium. Wonderful touches on making the setting modern yet still timeless. And to those who felt it was very anti-America.. actually, you're just being too narrow-sighted. The movie is anti-government abusing its position in the world as an authority.

Also, finally got to (re)meet Ian this weekend. Panda bear Isha and her brother Basil and I meet up with Sam, Ian, Carlo and Tom at Seattle's Best in Makati. Had a laugh over Eigermann, a weird cook, and other little stories. Caught up with Marc Ambrosio (Flashpoint!!!!) and traded RPG stories.

Headed to Crocodile Grill and had my taste of ostrich salpicao which did not taste like anything strange to be honest. At most, the strangest thing about it was it was fowl (ostrich) but tasted like beef. Oh well...

And ran the first attempt at a Global Frequency rpg session. Had much fun! Though kinda rusty with approaching modern action, I hope the game still had enough zing to be enjoyable.

MIGRAINES... ARGH...

RPG article: Recommended Ambient Music
by Tobie Abad
(written way back March 14, 2001)

Here are some of the highly recommended music CDs that I use in my games. I have arranged them to be organized by "time period." Some of them are pretty obscure titles, while others are a bit more familiar.

Scores can be used as mere background music that builds the mood instead of the scene. In other words, the music is meant for the PLAYERS to hear, not the characters. On occasion, it can be fun to incorporate the music as something meant for the player characters as well. (For example, when meeting a person of authority, play Pachebel's Canon as the characters enter the room and describe the music as something the characters hear from the main office. Then scream and cut the music abruptly. The players can have a better idea what happened.)

It takes practice to use music. And more so to familiarize yourself with each track to find the right one to use at a key moment, but trust me, using music effectively can be a huge addition to establishing immersive games.

Hope you find this useful!

*Note though when SCORE and not Soundtrack is used. And if an artist is given by name, it normally means any CD by the artist is pretty much safe to explore.

DARK AGES - MEDIEVAL TIMES
1.) Il Postino Soundtrack
2.) Medieval babes
3.) Enya
4.) Classical Music, especially those by Verdi, Strauss, Orff and Pachebel
5.) Princess Mononoke Soundtrack
6.) Final Fantasy V Score
7.) Tracks from Diablo
8.) Tracks from Vampire: the Redemption
9.) Final Fantasy VII Soundtrack(not much though, just a few)
10.) Loreena McKennit
11.) Story of the Rose Soundtrack
12.) Landscapes collections (these go for a $1 each)
13.) Joan of Arc: The Messenger soundtrack
14.) Gladiator Score
15.) Era
16.) Interview with a Vampire
17.) Bram's Stoker's Dracula
18.) Nausicaa Score
19.) Insider Soundtrack
20.) Dead Can Dance
21.) The Red Violin
22.) First Knight Soundtrack
23.) La Cite Des Enfants perdus Soundtrack
24.) Last of the Mohicans Soundtrack

MODERN NIGHTS
1.) Devil's Advocate Soundtrack
2.) Le Femme Nikita Soundtrack
3.) Stigmata Soundtrack
4.) Se7en Soundtrack
5.) Romeo and Juliet Score
6.) Silence of the Lambs Score
7.) Fifth Element Soundtrack
8.) Matrix Score
9.) Enemy of the State Soundtrack
10.) Ghost in the Shell Score
11.) Akira Soundtrack
12.) Evangelion Score
13.) Silent Hill Score
14.) Dark City Soundtrack
15.) Enigma
16.) The Crow Score
17.) The Red Shoe Diaries Soundtracks
18.) Twin Peaks: Walk the Fire with Me
19.) Almost any techno/drum and bass music
20.) Anthony Way
21.) X Files Mike Snow Score
22.) City of Angels Score
23.) Terminator 2 Score
24.) Mission Impossible 1 Score

And for more experienced Storytellers, try mixing music from either list for any setting. Even gospel chants by Benedictine Monks can sound disturbingly appropriate if used in a Modern Setting.

Have fun!

To Arnold Arre,

On ANG MUNDO NI ANDONG AGIMAT:
Let me say that though I still hold Mythology Class and Trip to Tagaytay as better story-wise, the artwork of Andong Agimat truly shows the evolution of your style into a truly distinct and expressive one. I loved the line work! I loved the shadows! I loved how they all appeared to have depth and form and at the same time, carried themselves with a body language that was very pinoy and very expressive! Though at some panels I had to re-read them to try and discern who was doing what, when it came to the ones that were beautifully composed, I could not help but sink into the page and marvel at your work.

I liked how you also truly captured the claustrophobic and almost computerless-cyberpunk feel that Manila has in your work. There was a very distinct feel of the comic being set in Manila and this had nothing to do with the use of Filipino or dialects in the dialogue.

The script, though hard to read (since am used to English) and in some cases felt stilted like it was a direct English - Tagalog translation, was very interesting in the way it tried to avoid spoon-feeding information but giving enough to keep the plot going. The old dialect used to represent the ancient speech was nicely decipherable enough to get the gist of the message.

All in all, this was a fun read! A very dark and serious follow-up to Mythology Class' approach to Philippine Mythology, and yet an action-packed modern romp into the local concept of a Superhero.

Congratulations on the new book!
And thank you for inspiring us to try to make our own too.

Sincerely,

Tobie Abad

YOU DID NOT SEE ANYTHING....

If you by any chance saw the animated film MADAGASCAR, you'd remember the penguins in that movie. Ever wanted to get to meet one up close? Panda bear Isha and I were celebrating (for a second time) our monthsary and were enroute to SM MALL OF ASIA only to discover it actually does close by eight o'clock. So we decided to head to the next fun looking venue in the area: Star City. Last time I visited Star City was a loooong time ago (Oi, hindi naman to the point hindi ka pa pinapanganak Ish.. grr...) and I was with my friends desperately seeking to horrify the men dressed as monsters in those fun house horror booths. So I felt kind of giddy as a child to see how much Star City has changed since then. And the answer was: VERY MUCH and yet not quite so. So dressed in our matching Jedi outfits (we both had a cloth "adornment" covering our shoulders and neck), we made our way inside.

First noticeable change was the scaling up of its cosmetic qualities! With a full animatronic display up front (which I guess to save on money, they left unmoving) to the air conditioned entrance, it was clear this wasn't the Star City of before which had billboard wooden entrances and those pink ticket stubs similar to movie tickets of yore. The pricing scheme was confusing, taking me almost three attempts before I realised there was an entrance fee (Php60 or $1.25) an entrance fee with 3 rides (Php 200 or approximately $4.00) and an entrance fee with all-you-can-ride option (Php 250 or approximately $4.50). Once inside, the first thing you see are rows upon rows of tiangee stalls selling everything from t-shirts, to funky pens, to perfumes, pirated DVDs, shoes and even pellet guns! Then you find the first few game booths and food stalls.

We opted to eat at Chowking and were delighted to discover they served "Shrimp Fries" and Fortune Cookies! Then headed to the game booths where Isha actually won us a PIG!!!! (I from this point on name thee Nathaniel the Pig. Natz the Nutty Neighbor of Suzy and Geno) We went around, talking about how cool the buildings seem to have been built with the rides precisely in mind and eventually found a sign that offered "Have you MEET Penguin?" (that's the sign in verbatim). We stepped in to discover how much we loved the penguins! There were five cute birds (one of which looked sad and lonely. Further investigation led us to discover the fifth was separated from its mate and was molting. Penguins actually do shed their feathery hides on occasion.) We learned you're allowed to touch them, so long as you do it gently and started to reach out towards them and discover how adorable the little things were. Under the kind supervision of an informative animal handler, we got a quick dose of information on how much endangered they were, on how they're pretty picky on what they eat, and like. Soon, more people started showing up, and seeing me and Isha handling the penguins, started reaching for them too. It was such a wonderful time, so wonderful that it made the whole visit to Star City (for sixty bucks!!! An additional forty bucks per person to see the penguins!) so much worth it. We recommend you find time to visit if you can.

Isha even was permitted to keep one of the penguins' molted feathers. Cute tiny thing. Made me sneeze though.

So again, I cannot stress how much fun it was, do find time to visit the Penguins at Star City! They have feeding hours at 8:30pm and 10:30pm where you can see them running around on thier tiny little feet! Cameras are welcome too!

Oh, and yes, I love you Isha!

HAPPY MONTH-SARY SWEETIE!
Image hosting by Photobucket

Although I personally am more an Anniversary kind of guy, I guess there's no harm in celebrating a monthsary when a month feels like we're known each other for a full year already! Our relationship can't get anything but stronger sweetie. I love you, Isha!

KNOW THYSELF...
Yep, am joining the strip-me-bare-and-see-my-soul fun! Do find some time to contribute to Tobito's Johari window and Tobito's Nohari window! The Johari Window gives one a glimpse of how one sees oneself and how this viewpoint relates to how others view you. The Nohari on the other hand focuses on the more negative aspects and criticisms of one's personality.

Come on in and don't feel shy!

GARAPANDA is BORN!
Yep! Will try to get some pictures of Panda Bear Isha and Garapata Bodjie Tobie's twins! TWINS?!??!? Uh.. yeah... you'll see what I mean when I find a chance to take pictures of the two lovely babies.

I can't wait for this upcoming movie! Its the latest movie by M. Night Shyamalan! I wonder if this movie tries to tie in mermaids with the concept of the Arthurian Lady in the Lake? And I wonder if they'll give The Little Mermaid (both the brutal original and the kiddiefied Disney version) some touches to this too. Do the butterflies have a role too? Lastly, am so happy they are using the Josh Groban's variant of the Cinema Paradiso song for it! Lovely lovely touch!

Just saw the ZsaZsa Zaturnnah Musical last Sunday

Thanks to the ever humble Carlo Vergara, Panda Bear Isha and I were able to watch the musical adapation of the ZsaZsa Zaturnnah graphic novel! The roaringly funny campfest was truly an enjoyable sight to behold! From the interstellar journey of the Zaturnnah stone across planets to the grand finale which proves its time for Darna and Krystala to move aside, the production was one that brought laughs and tears and never had a single dull moment.

I wish I had a copy of the soundtrack! I wish I had a chance to meet all the cast! I wish I could have watched it again! And most of all, I wish I DID audition back when they were looking for people willing to play the zombies! Gah... this is the second lost opportunity that I let slip from my grasp.

Congratulations to Carl and to the whole cast of the production! I can see only bigger things to come after this! Mabuhay kayong lahat!

On a side note

My Panda bear was teasing me about having my own private fan following, having bumped into a group of Lasallians two weeks ago when she submitted her 1st Philippine Graphic/Fiction awards entry at Rockwell. The group, she said, knew of me and my works and supposedly spoke highly of my work! Egad.

During the intermission, as Isha and I were making our way back to our seats, we bumped into a bespectacled guy who suddenly stared at me and asked, "Tobie... Tobie Abad?" I actually switched into my "bumping into someone whose name I forgot" mode and yelled out, "Oi! Musta!" (I've always had this problem with names and faces) and realized that I should have fessed up and admitted I didn't recall who he was. Isha, of course, had a ball of a time teasing me about having so many fans!

If only!

Soon to follow...

More pictures of me and Isha! And some images from the past!
Check it out soon!

SPEND THE DAY IN INTRAMUROS!
Panda Bear Isha insisted I check it out even if I wasn't feeling particularly interested that day. It was last Saturday, amidst the hooplah and the teleseyre sa totoong buhay going on in Edsa and Makati, when she and I headed to Intramuros to check out the sights!

Boy did we have fun!

So many sights to see! So many places to visit! So many things to check out! Some were scary, some were strange, some were outright beautiful, some were incredibly moving... but all in all, it was one fun early afternoon!

Check out the pictures for some of the highlights:
